Lose the lines, keep the smile

They say it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown, but no one knows for sure how many of the 43 muscles in the face each expression requires because everyone smiles differently. We DO know that Botox can keep you from using the muscles that allow you to deepen those frown lines without even realizing it. Better still: Botox injections can help your smile shine brighter without fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth!

Losing the laugh lines and canceling the crow's feet can minimize the signs of aging. For our patients in Vero Beach Botox is an effective and reliable non-invasive aesthetic option for wrinkle reduction with minimal downtime.

What is Botox?

Relax the muscles, reduce the wrinkles

Also known by its full name, “BOtulinum TOXin,” Botox is a toxin produced by the microbe that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning. That might sound scary, but when administered by the experienced staff at OceanDrive Med Spa Botox is very safe.

Cosmetic Botox was the first treatment approved by the FDA to reduce moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines. That was 20 years ago, and it remains the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedure to this day. Strategically placed, Botox injections temporarily relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles by blocking specific chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. Botox is also used to treat neurological disorders that cause muscle weakness, as well as for migraines and other medical conditions.

What are the benefits of Botox?

Besides smoothing out the aging effects of forehead lines and crow’s feet, Botox treatment can make you look - and even feel - less stressed. While it can’t permanently reverse deep lines and wrinkles, the relaxing effect Botox has on muscles reduces their appearance and keeps the muscles from contracting in ways that deepen them.

One of the reasons Botox treatment is so popular is that it delivers predictable, subtle results you'll see within just a few days with little or no downtime. You’ll still look like you, just refreshed, younger, and less stressed! Here are some of the other things Botox can do aside from reducing the appearance of aging:

  • Correct crossed eyes.
  • Stop migraines.
  • Reduce excessive sweating.
  • Relieve muscle tension.
  • Create bladder control.
  • Reduce joint pain and TMJ.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Botox works best for women and men between 18 and 65 with healthy skin with at least moderate elasticity. Botox might be right for you if:

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You are physically healthy.
  • You have crow's feet or worry lines around your eyes.
  • You have moderate to severe frown lines between the brows.
  • Your makeup is collecting in facial creases and lines.

You should NOT have Botox if:

  • Facial lines do not appear or deepen with different facial expressions.
  • You have a history of neuromuscular disease.
  • You are allergic to eggs (which contain the same protein found in Botox).
  • You are pregnant or nursing.

Your Botox Procedure

Botox treatment: What to expect

Before your Botox injections: Tell your doctor about any muscle relaxants, sleeping aids, or allergy medications you might be taking and if you've had any Botox injections within the past four months. Avoid blood thinners for several days before your injection can help reduce your risk of bleeding or bruising, but never stop taking any prescribed medication without clearing it with your primary care physician first. Your doctor might use various methods to numb the area, such as topical anesthesia, ice, and vibration anesthesia, which uses massage to reduce discomfort.

During Botox treatment: Botox injections are done in the comfort of the OceanDrive Med Spa offices and only take a few minutes. We inject very small amounts of botulinum toxin into the skin or muscles using a thin needle. How many injections you need depends on several factors, including the extent of the area being treated.

After Botox injections: Do not rub or massage the treated areas for at least 24 hours after getting your Botox injections, since this could help prevent the toxin from spreading to a different area. You can resume most normal activities right after the procedure.

Botox Recovery

Minimal downtime, quick recovery

Because Botox treatment requires minimal downtime, you can return to your daily routine immediately after leaving OceanDrive Med Spa. However, there are certain activities you should avoid immediately after getting Botox injections.

For the first two hours, you should keep your head level and avoid bending it forward. Avoid lying down for the next six hours, and don't do any heavy exercise for at least a day. You should not take ibuprofen or any blood-thinning medications, which could increase bruising at the injection sites.

Botox Results

You should start to see results from Botox injections within a few days after treatment. Still, it can take several days to see full results. Results can last three months or longer, depending on the problem and treatment area. You'll need regular follow-up injections to maintain the effect.

Botox FAQs

Experiences vary, but Botox injections can be virtually painless with topical anesthetic and the proper techniques. Some who do feel it describe it as a slight sting or a mosquito bite. You might feel some discomfort immediately following Botox injections, which should fade within minutes, but it can take a few hours to subside completely.

Risks include:

  • Bruising, swelling, redness, and pain at the injection site.
  • Headache or nausea.
  • Dry-eye or excessive tearing.
  • Facial weakness or drooping.

Botox injections cost around $10 to $15 per unit. So for the average 30 to 40 units that might be used to treat the forehead and eye area, for example, you can expect to pay between $300 to $600.

While both are aesthetic procedures aimed at reducing wrinkles, Botox and dermal fillers take slightly different approaches, treat somewhat different problems, and are used in different areas of the face. Botox relaxes muscles, so they don't contract and form creases, while dermal fillers fill in or plump up areas that have lost volume or smoothness. Which one is better comes down to your specific needs and concerns.

Botox might have been the first drug to use botulinum toxin, but it was not the last. OceanDrive Med Spa also offers Dysport and Xeomin, which are also made with botulinum but vary in dosage units and best uses.

Xeomin tends to work better for patients who may have developed a resistance or no longer see improvements with Botox. Dysport is an option for patients who are new to wrinkle reduction treatments. It is similar to Botox and is designed to treat large areas such as the forehead.
