As people age, the levels of key hormones in the body go down. These include estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. These hormones (among others) control almost every task in your body. These essential tasks include brain and sex function, the breakdown of food, and growth. Hormone balance is critical to health and longevity, and when hormones aren’t in proper balance, physical and mental issues can arise.
Our Vero Beach Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy helps restore hormonal balance, which can energize you, make you feel better, improve sex drive and performance, help you to sleep better, and generally get you back to feeling more youthful and invigorated.
Hormones are chemical messengers secreted into your bloodstream by your endocrine glands. Hormones impact virtually all of your body’s systems and functions and impact your cognitive functions and moods as well.
Signs and symptoms of hormone imbalance may include:
These signs and symptoms may be caused by many medical conditions but can be from hormone imbalance. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is best to see a medical specialist for an exam and lab evaluation to determine the cause. If your evaluation shows a hormone imbalance, you may be a candidate for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).
Bioidentical hormones are man-made hormones, very similar to hormones produced by our bodies. These then are used to treat people who have low or imbalanced hormone levels. Bioidentical hormones that are typically prescribed are progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. Prescription bioidentical hormones are pre-made by drug companies. An example of this type of prescription medication is estrogen, which is manufactured from the urine of pregnant mares.
Other forms of BHRT are made custom by a pharmacy based on what the doctor requests. This is called compounding. These natural hormones are typically made from soy or yams. They come in various doses and delivery routes such as pills, creams, gels, vaginal inserts, or pellets implanted underneath the skin, such as BioTE®.
BioTE® is a brand of BHRT that involves replacing deficient hormones via pellets underneath the skin. The pellets are tiny cylindrical-shaped supplements placed under your skin in the hip region. They are no bigger than a grain of rice. The pellets contain estrogen and testosterone that are made from yams. The dose of the pellets is customized to allow a very personalized approach to BHRT. Your dose will be unique to you and your personal situation and lab findings. The pellets will enable the body to absorb the correct level of hormone over time using a method that the body can process efficiently. They release a stream of hormones at a steady rate into your body throughout the day, so you won’t have to worry about peaks or surges of hormones that may happen with other types of hormone replacement therapy. The pellets are slowly absorbed over a period of three to six months, at which time they must be replaced. This option is perfect for a patient who does not want to take a pill daily, apply a cream/gel to the skin every day, or come into an office for weekly injections.
Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is used to treat women and men whose hormone levels have dropped significantly or have become unbalanced. For women, BHRT is frequently used to reduce symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, such as hot flashes and loss of interest in sex or pain during sex.
Clinical data have linked BHRT with improvements in:
You will need to provide your complete medical history to your provider, including all surgeries and chronic health conditions. Blood work is performed 3-7 days before the procedure and reviewed and analyzed to determine your correct dose.
The procedure to place the pellets is quick and takes less than 10 minutes. First, a small area on the skin of the posterior hip is disinfected to prevent infection and numbed for comfort. Once the numbing medication is given enough time to work, a small incision is made in the skin. The pellets are then placed underneath the skin via a stainless-steel tool called a "trocar." The trocar is removed, and the small incision is then closed with wound closure adhesives. The area is then covered with gauze and a waterproof transparent dressing that must remain present for seven days. After insertion, our Vero Beach Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy patients must be careful not to submerge the dressing in water, such as hot tubs, pools, baths, or getting into the ocean. They also must be careful not to engage in glute-heavy exercises like squatting for a week after insertion, as excessive glute movement could move the pellets out of position. After that time, regular activity can resume.

Side effects are unlikely but can happen. They may include:
Side effects are transient and often resolve on their own as the body gets used to hormone therapy. However, if symptoms are persistent, doses are adjusted at following visits.
BHRT is FDA-approved, and the hormones used in the procedure have been proven safe. Vigorous quality control measures are enforced to ensure these hormones meet the FDA's strict standards.
Do not extend treatment beyond seven years. The best guide is to discontinue treatment once you have achieved desired relief from your symptoms.
Yes, indeed! A good diet is vitally important in maintaining healthy hormone levels. Eat lots of fibrous and whole foods and avoid processed or sugary products. Increase your water intake and get regular and vigorous exercise.
Bioidentical hormones differ from those used in standard therapy in that they are chemically identical to the hormones produced naturally by our bodies. Bioidentical hormones are made from plant estrogens. The hormones used in traditional hormone therapy are typically made from the urine of pregnant horses, as well as some synthetic hormones.

It depends. If your BHRT is used to address documented health problems, your insurance may cover at least some of the costs. Check with your insurance company about pre-qualification and authorization for hormone replacement therapy.
Costs will vary according to your treatment's type, range, and extent. However, national statistics place the average cost of BHRT at between $200 and $500 per month.
